Sports Out of the Norm

We are all aware of popular sports, yet there are some sports that are not well known, but have a universal popularity.

Urban Golf

If you don't want to stroll around the golf green and get all that healthy exercise, there is another little known alternative, Urban golf. This is where the participants attack an innocent warehouse wall with their golf ball.

Bike Polo

Whenever you haven't got any four-legged horses, the only way to play polo is on cycles. This swiftly expanding sport has quickly developed into an international competitive calendar.

Unicycle Sport

Once only witnessed on stage, or in circuses, the unicycle has grown to be a global phenomenon. From balancing acts and acrobats, to mountain racing, to unicycle hockey, the one wheeler has become an instant wonder.

Roller Derby

Roller Derby players pride themselves on their combination of punk grit and attitude, alongside genuine athletic ability. The women's Flat-Track Derby Association sponsored its first roller derby's national championship tournament in 2007.

Wife Carrying

Firstly introduced in Finland, wife carrying is a sport where male competitors race while carrying a female team mate. The aim is for the male to carry his partner, whose task is to maintain the balance, over a particular obstacle course, in the fastest time.

The carrying holds vary from fireman's carry, piggyback, to Estonian style, where the woman hangs on upside-down, with her legs around her partner's shoulders, as she clings on to his waist. Major competitions are held in Wisconsin, Finland, Monona, Sonkajarvi, and in Marquette, Michigan.

The prize in Finland is the woman's weight in beer.

Moustache Championships

Growing a moustache and beard is a serious business, as seen at the biennial World Beard And Moustache Championships, where men display their carefully manicured extraordinary beards and moustaches. Categories include full beard freestyle, goatee and Dali moustache.

Of course you must have all the proper tools, from brushes, combs and scissors, to moustache wax and moustache nets.

Recreational Sport of Zorbing

While many see this as a merely recreational sport, there is an increasing following to Zorbing. Each contestant 'walks' down a set trail, concealed inside a car-sized globe of plastic, hitting speeds of around 50 kms per hour. This is not a sport for the faint hearted and there are medical restrictions.

Cardboard Tube Duelling

We all know about the knights of old dueling in their coats of armour. The modern knight is very serious about his Cardboard Tube Duelling. The participants duel with cardboard tubes, dressed in cardboard box amour.

Snow Polo

The old sport of Snow Polo was once common with Turkish emperors. It is played on compacted snow on flat ground, or a frozen lake.

However, polo has not been restricted only to horseback. There are now BMX polo, yak polo, elephant polo, canoe polo, camel polo, golfcart polo, and underwater polo.
